The Maryland Soccer Legends Organization mourns the passing of its former president and board member William “Bill” Schonowski.
Bill was president of the Old Timers Soccer of Maryland ( now Maryland Soccer Legends) from 2009 to 2016 and previously was a board member in charge of membership. He was also a 2003 inductee into the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame.
Bill grew up in Locust Point and was a great all-round athlete. Yet his first love was soccer. He played for many Locust Point teams both as a youth and an adult and was an All-State halfback in high school playing for Calvert Hall. Bill passed on the opportunity to attend college to enter a career as a longshoreman eventually becoming president of the Baltimore Chapter of the International Longshoremen’s Union.
Bill loved to counsel and teach young soccer players instructing them on how to play hard with good clean sportsmanship. Besides being in the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame, Bill is also an inductee of the South Baltimore Softball Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife Norma and three children Bill Jr., Kathy and Cindy.
The entire board and members of the Maryland Soccer Legends extend their deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
May he rest in peace. Bill’s contribution and love of thebill game of soccer in Maryland will be missed.
Our current members remember….
I remember Bill as a kind, respectful, reliable gentleman. He lead our association with dignity and sophisticated composure. He was instrumental in securing many important contributions from people he privately knew, which have been indispensable to our organization. Personally, I always saw Bill as being a great leader and a true advocate for the beautiful game that has brought us together. My prayers are with him and his family.
